Middle School Girls' Soccer

Coach Donnie Green talks with the team. The 2009-2010 school year saw the dawn of  a new era in soccer at GCA, the inaugural season of girls' soccer in both high school and middle school. Both teams attacked the pre-season with enthusiasm as they prepared for a rigorous schedule against seasoned team from around the region. The middle school soccer team, coached by Donnie Green, entered the season with only a few players who have had experience playing on club teams since early childhood, but stepping up to the interscholastic level would be a new and exciting challenge.

Coach Green has been involved in soccer for over 10 years coaching at various levels such as AYSO, indoor, club and MS soccer. He adds, "I love the sport and enjoy working with children. I have 2 goals set as a coach; the first is to further develop their skills and second is to always give God the glory whether we win or lose. I'm very happy to be the head coach for the GCA girls MS soccer program. This is a first year program at Grace for the middle and high school level and I believe that the future of soccer looks great for Grace Christian Academy."

The girls traveled to Norris to take on the Norris Middle School B team and came away with a 7-3 victory. girls played very well, with the Lady Ram defense being the focal point of the game. The tempo was pushed throughout the game, and the increased aggressive play created some great scoring opportunities. While the players are young and have not played together long, they stepped up their game to a new level in this game, as the midfielders and defenders were outstanding in the contest.

Offensively, Grace showed it can score on anyone with the 1-2 punch of eighth grade captains Shelby Green and Lauren Hensley leading the way. The scorong started out with a textbook play, when Lauren Hensley received a good pass from eighth grade classmate Lauren Martin and took it to the right corner end-line, delivering a high cross pass just in front of the goal line. Shelby Green left her feet, received the ball with her chest and put it in, giving Grace the 1-0 lead.

Shelby Green and Lauren Hensley both scored 3 goals each, with both adding one assist while seventh grader Hannah McIntyre scored a goal to finish off the scoring effort. Eighth grader Lauren Martin played well offensively, making some great passes and getting two assists along the way. Defensively, both goal keepers played great tonight as sixth grader Chloe Wright and eighth grade student Marisa Infield had many outstanding stops.
