Kindergarten: Is my child ready?
How will I know when my child is ready for kindergarten?
That is the question all parents have as their child grows and develops. As every child is uniquely created by God, we also realize that not every child is at the same place developmentally. Here are a few basic things to consider when begining to plan for your child's entry into kindergarten:
Children must be five years old by September 30 of the year that they will begin kindergarten. In addition to age, there are other important factors to consider including academic readiness, social skills and maturity level in deciding when your child is ready for school.
Signs of Kindergarten Readiness:
- Able to state their full name and age
- Writes their first name legibly
- Holds a pencil or crayon with a relaxed grip
- Recognizes and identifies colors
- Counts to ten or higher
- Follows directions from a teacher
- Listens to a story attentively for about 15 minutes
- Works on one activity for 10-15 minutes
- Able to separate comfortably from parents
- Takes care of dress, personal items and toilet needs with relative independence
Just because a child is five years old does not mean that they are ready for kindergarten. It is important to consider your child’s maturity level, independence, and ability to focus on an activity for an extended period of time. Rest assured that our teachers and principals want the best for your child and will help advise you during the screening process. We want all students to have a successful educational experience!
