Students Wear Red for Haitian Relief
Red is a color that often is used to signify danger, and the message was not only delivered but was also worn by GCA middle and upper school students. This day was a call to remember the hundreds of thousands of Haitian people who are in desperate need of water, food, housing, and medical care.
Two GCA seniors, Rachel Hopper and Raegan Geyer, came up with a unique approach to raising funds and awareness to the school about the plight of the people of Haiti. The idea was to allow students to pay at least one dollar to wear a red shirt and another dollar to wear blue jeans to school on Tuesday.
The two girls used Facebook to increase the visibility and awareness to students about the scope of the project, and within hours, many students pledged to support the cause.
Participation was estimated at 95% for the one-day event, which created a sea of red in the hallways and classrooms. Many students gave more than the minimum in order to benefit those who have lost everything. More than $1,500 was raised, and it will be given to Samaritan's Purse, the world relief and ministry created by Franklin Graham, to be distributed to Haiti disaster relief.
